Os Estados Unidos têm a primeira mulher Presidente e ela não é apenas mais um Presidente. Para começar, é modelo de honestidade, integridade e independência face aos interesses. Depois, junta a isso, a natural generosidade feminina, a preocupação com os mais fracos e oprimidos e a revolta contra as estruturas de poder instaladas. Para cúmulo, é mãe, tem 1,86 m (!) e até é bonita. Ela é Mackenzie Allen, a actual 'campeã' de audiências da ABC e o centro de uma enorme polémica política no outro lado do Atlântico, porque os Republicanos entenderam ver na nova série da ABC, Commander in Chief, uma manobra panfletária de lançamento da candidatura de Hillary Clinton, em 2008.

Não acredito que a série faça parte do 'material de campanha' de Hillary Clinton, mas sei que é, certamente, uma inteligente forma de ir mudando a tradicional mentalidade puritana da sociedade americana, habituando-a à ideia de ter uma mulher Presidente.

Vendo friamente a realidade, apesar de os EUA serem muitas vezes considerados como a «land of the free» e de tantas vezes apelarem aos «equal rights and equal opportunities», a verdade é que a sociedade típica americana, aquela que não vive em New York (e na costa leste em geral) ou em L.A., é profundamenta tradicionalista, conservadora e até proviciana. O Presidente Bush é, eventualmente, o expoente máximo dessa América genuína que não veste CK ou DKNY, que não aprecia outra cultura que não a das pipocas e do baseball e que não se preocupa com o que acontece para lá da fronteira do seu Estado. América rural, muitas vezes atrasada e verdadeiramente puritana, que dificilmente se revê em mulheres emancipadas e independentes e num discurso socialmente mas liberal.

É exactamente esta América que muitas vezes decide as eleições e, por isso, é ela que tem que ser conquistada e convencida. E é exactamente nesta lógica que a série da ABC é importante, porque vende a ideia de uma mulher Presidente, associada à integridade, aos princípios e à fidelidade a convicções, muitas vezes morais, que rompem com o poder instituído. É por isso que esta série pode ajudar Hillary Clinton numa eventual candidatura. É por isso que há razões para os Republicanos estarem preocupados, não por a série apelar ao voto em Hillary Clinton, mas por puder levar a uma mudança de mentalidade que pode eleger a Primeira Mulher Presidente dos EUA.
